Every day this past week, I've been the first to wake up, to get everything together, and always ready to leave home on time. Of course, on the day we have to pick up the parents from their ship, I'm woken by my brother at the time we're supposed to be walking out the door. I had slept through my alarm clock and slept a deep, dreamless sleep. So I went into panic mode and gathered all my things as fast as I possibly could, but still managed to make us even more late. My poor brothers waited on me in the car while I gathered the rest of my wits about me.
When we finally got on the road, hungry and without coffee (imagine how devastated I was), we got lost several times and it took even longer to get to our destination. Luckily, our parents must have missed us a lot, because they were in a good mood when we finally were able to pick them up an hour later than we intended to arrive. Hugs abounded and from there, our exhausted family went to the beach.
We went to Folly Beach. It was lovely, and not crowded at all. Although I will warn you, as fluffy and soft the sand is when you first approach the shore, it is not so continued to the water. The beach has become so much more rocky than I remember, and you have to watch your step so that you don't hurt your tootsies. I now have a lovely bruise on one of my little toes, courtesy of a beach rock. But besides that, I had so much fun at the beach.
Personally, I was absolutely thrilled. I hadn't been to the beach in maybe a year or more, and it happens to be one of my favorite places in the world. The sun was concealed by clouds, and it drizzled a bit of rain. But the air was warm, the breeze was cool, and the ocean was very much alive. It was impossible to look and not marvel at the Creator's handiwork. The waves were impressive today, so much so that we even saw a few people ride their surfboards. The grey sky was awesome. It was perfect, beautiful beach weather. Although some people may disagree, I believe cloudy beach days are some of the most glorious. Everything just seems so much more alive, and the wind is so refreshing. And I don't have to worry about getting sunburned (there's a method to my madness).
After a few splashes, we enjoyed a yummy seafood meal at the Crab Shack, an adorable little restaurant about a two minute drive from the water. Apparently they had an honorable mention in the Southern Living magazine. I had been to this particular restaurant before, but it was a long time ago. Today I refreshed my memory with a bowl of Shrimp n' Grits, (I know I had some yesterday, but I was born in the South, okay). Their crabs and fried seafood are very popular and tasty, but they were so much pricier than I last remembered. So after you choke pass the price, the food itself is very enjoyable. Definitely not something I'd have frequently; if anything, best served for special occasions or after a day at the beach.
The long drive home ended with a great way to hang with the parents again: with a few slices of pizza and watching Megamind as a family. This was the first time in a long time that our family had a pizza-movie night. Growing up, they happened every weekend with homemade pizza and a movie chosen by one of the siblings. Since I began college, those habits discontinued and we all got wrapped up in the business of growing up. But, luckily for us, mama has decided to try and start making pizzas on the weekends again! Which means more movie nights. And more family nights!
Blessings~
